Sankey Canal & Sanky Brook (Newton Le Willows Affiliation)

We have a reciprocal agreement with Newton Le Willows Angling Association which allows Port Sunlight Angling Club (PSAC) Members to fish the Sanky Canal upper and lower compounds and their stretch of the Sanky Brook with members of the Newton Le Willows AA allowed to fish our stretches of the Shropshire Union Canal  and the Weaver Navigation at Sutton Weaver.

General Description

Sankey Canal – Upper Pound

Location: Off Bradlegh Road, Newton-le-Willows, WA12 8RB.

Permit and Photo ID must be carried at all times. PSAC members must carry their photo ID Card or the Clubmate App on their smart phone.

Fish Species: Bream, Chub, Common Carp, Crucian Carp, Eel, F1 Carp, Ide, Koi Carp, Mirror Carp, Perch, Pike, Roach, Rudd, Skimmers, Tench

It is approx 1300 meters long and has 103 pegs on it, there is some very good specimen fishing for Carp, Tench and Pike, also some very good silver fish and pleasure angling to be had. It is blocked off at both ends so there is no boat traffic.

This section is also used for most Association matches in the senior match program.

Sankey Canal – Lower Pound

Location: Off Tyrer Road, Newton -le-Willows, WA12 8SP.

Permit and Photo ID must be carried at all times. PSAC members must carry their photo ID Card or the Clubmate App on their smart phone.

Fish Species: Bream, Chub, Common Carp, Crucian Carp, Eel, F1 Carp, Koi Carp, Mirror Carp, Perch, Pike, Roach, Rudd, Skimmers, Tench.

Notes: The Lower Pound is approx 600 meters long and this section accommodates 56 pegs. Although the lower pound is mainly for pleasure angling it does have some matches on it, these are junior, ladies and outside club matches.

The stocking levels here are that of a commercial fishery, but without the high cost of daily fishing.

Sankey Brook

Location: Off Bradleigh Road, Newton-le-Willows, behind the Upper Pound, upstream to Penkford Bridge. WA12 8RB.

Fish Species: Barbel, Bream, Chub, Common Carp, Dace, Eel, Mirror Carp, Perch, Pike, Roach, Rudd, Skimmers.

Notes: Newton-le-Willows A.A. control approx 1.25 miles of this up and coming little river downstream of Penkford Bridge. It has some nice glides for trotting with a stick float and some nice fast riffles for feeder fishing. There are shallow and deep holes, overhanging trees and vegetation for holding fish. There are some Chub of 3lbs average, roach over the pound, barbel up to 4lbs, dace etc. Travel light so you can move around from swim to swim.
